Value of abnormal retinal correspondence in binocular vision.

چکیده

ABNORMAL retinal correspondence has been a vexed subject since the physiology of binocular vision and strabismus have been discussed, but it seems to be generally accepted that it is an adaptation of the sensory relations of the retina to the squinting position. Normal retinal correspondence is present when any pair of corresponding points have a common visual direction; abnormal retinal correspondence occurs when retinal areas which are ordinarily disparate prove to have a common visual direction (Swan, 1950). At the onset of a squint, retinal correspondence is normal and projection is incorrect by an amount equal to the angle of deviation, but according to Duke-Elder (1950):

Abnormal retinal correspondence; a preliminary report on the treatment of abnormal retinal correspondence by Cüppers' after-image method.

ABNORMAL retinal correspondence is found to be present in a considerable number of cases of concomitant strabismus. Muller (1826) thought that the anomalous projection was due to a congenital malposition of the macula of the squinting eye. It was suggested by von Graefe (1855) that the anomalous projection occurred as a result of the squint. Parinaud (1899) postulated that normal binocular func...

Deficiency of adaptive control of the binocular coordination of saccades in strabismus

Disconjugate (different in the two eyes) oculomotor adaptation is driven by the need to maintain binocular vision. Since binocular vision is deficient in strabismus, we wondered whether oculomotor disconjugate adaptive capabilities are deficient in such subjects. We studied eight adult subjects with constant, long-standing convergent strabismus of variable angles (4-30 prism D). No subject had ...

Early Operation for Squint.

To the Editorial Committee of the BRITISH JOURNAL OF OPHTHALMOLOGY SIRS,-It is the common experience of those surgeons who operate early on children with constant convergent squint of onset before the age of 2 years that, in those cases which they are able to follow up, if all the manifest obstacles to development of binocular vision are removed, a small proportion will attain full binocularity...

Binocular vision with primary microstrabismus.

PURPOSE Patients with primary microstrabismus have a high degree of binocularity, which suggests that their ocular misalignment may have a sensory rather than an oculomotor origin, as in large-angle strabismus. The purpose of these experiments was to determine whether microstrabismic subjects have sensory abnormalities that could give rise to a small angle of strabismus. METHODS The binocular...

The effect of forced vergence on retinal correspondence

The spatial characteristics of the changes in retinal correspondence produced by forced convergence were studied. The vertical extent of lateral shifts in binocular correspondence were quantified by comparing the convergence of the eyes measured with binocular search coils to the convergence of the eyes as determined using nonius lines having vertical separations (gaps) between the nonius lines...
